What's Next for Carbon County?

kathy_henderson

By: Kathy Henderson, Director of Economic Development, CCEDC

Looking at our evolution as a society we have gone from hunters and gatherers to an agrarian society to an industrial society and now our latest iteration of technology.  What’s next? Alexander Graham Bell would not recognize the wireless communication technology of today. Nor could Charles Babbage, an English mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer in the early 19th century have foretold the power of the internet that we hold in our hands today.

Will we continue on the technology path or is there something out there that we have yet to discover or develop further such as artificial intelligence? Perhaps it will be colonizing other planets or something that none of us can even fathom.

One thing I do know; Carbon County is on the cusp of some pretty amazing things.  The projects that we are working on here at the CCEDC are very exciting and will help to positively transform our county and more importantly create more jobs.   Read More

Making a Difference Through Volunteering

alice_wanamaker

By Alice Wanamaker, CCEDC Member Relations Director

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."  Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Did Dr. Seuss know the power of his statement or the impact it would have on our lives? Probably not, but let's stop and think for a moment about the truth in what he said, "Someone like you, caring a whole awful lot." Who are these people, and what are they caring about?

We all have projects, organizations and people we care about. And the things I care about are not necessarily the same things you care about. That is exactly what makes the world of being a volunteer fun, exciting and successful. Volunteering to work the pierogi stand at the summer festival gets you out among like-minded individuals. If everyone volunteered for four events a year, they would be exposed to hundreds of people who enjoy the same things as they do and could meet new friends, or gain new business clients. Read More

Tis' the Season for Networking

marlyn_blogger

Holiday luncheons, family dinners, work parties, neighborhood get-togethers and festive feasts! Tis the season for gatherings, so why not use them to your benefit? Networking opportunities are all around you during the busy holiday season.

After-hours business mixers are not the only avenues available for networking opportunities. As you attend holiday festivities, be sure to have your business cards in hand! That's right, take advantage of the family gatherings - chat with your relatives about what you do and how they can help your business. Give away a few business cards to each of your family members and ask if they would be so kind and pass them along.

Bunching or Bundling Charitable Donations with a Donor-Advised Fund:  A great year-end stocking stuffer idea to benefit Carbon County-area charities

blogmastiani

By Guest Blogger, Joe Mastriani, CPA and Shareholder at Buckno Lisicky & Company

Individual taxpayers, who have two options when they file their personal federal income tax returns — take a standard deduction or itemize deductions — usually select the option that reduces their overall tax liability the most. Due to the recent tax law changes, the standard deduction available for taxpayers became much larger — almost twice what it was previously. This change makes it less likely that the sum of a taxpayer’s itemized deductions will exceed the larger standard deduction, especially with new limits in place on deductible state and local taxes (SALT, including real and personal property taxes, state and local income taxes, and sales taxes) and mortgage interest.

A potential side effect of fewer taxpayers itemizing their deductions is that these taxpayers may choose to reduce or eliminate charitable contributions to not-for-profit organizations because their contributions will no longer reduce their personal income taxes.  What can donors do to retain the tax deductibility of donations?Read More

Mindfulness Matters: Being Present

By Guest Blogger, Shelley Jaye Hunt, Jim Thorpe Massage & Wellness Studio

As we have hopefully adjusted to the end of daylight-saving time, Thanksgiving has been celebrated and we move toward winter and our religious and spiritual celebrations in December. Much to think about relative to time. We can fully embrace time in a different way. What if we still get up in the morning at the same time as we did before daylight savings? We could use this hour to do some meditation, or quietly contemplate our day, week and month ahead; perhaps in a different way. We can use this time to tune in to our body. How can time help us to focus on our wellness? One way for us to be present in our life is to listen to what our body needs. Your body will tell you exactly what it needs. Does a vigorous walk sound appealing? Go for one. Do you want to curl up on the couch with a book instead? Are you craving dark chocolate? Eat some. Maybe today you want fresh juice.

Being present is creating awareness in the moment, each moment. Much easier said than done. Imagine a practice of the simple act of paying attention to what is going on without changing anything. When you achieve being present you find increased happiness in the moments of life. The chaos and hectic times feel less stressful and recovery from trying times become effortless.

A Few of My Favorite Things

alice_wanamaker

By: Alice Wanamaker, CCEDC Member Relations Director

I applaud those of you who have or are in the process of establishing a business in Carbon County and for not only taking a positive step toward growing your business but also investing in yourself and the community. There are so many things to think about when starting a new business, each one as important as the next.

As Member Relations Director, I talk to many people about joining the Chamber of Commerce as an essential part of their growth plan, and what they get from their investment. There are so many benefits to joining; listing one or two benefits barley scratches the surface.  There are, however, a few benefits that I like to hone in on because they are usually the most valuable for our members - both new and established! These benefits are a few of my favorite things; Marketing, networking and referrals!

The Carbon Chamber & Economic Development (CCEDC) is an amazing resource for you and your business. We have the ability to partner you with invaluable resources, potential clients, customers, other businesses and the overall community. Our focus is on YOU, the business owner and our job is to make doing business in Carbon County a successful venture. Whether you are looking for a local supplier, or a list of folks who are interested in growing the community, we can help connect you with referrals or personal introductions.

Building a Climate of Trust

marlyn_kissner

By Marlyn Kissner, Executive V.P. of the GLVCC and Executive Director of the CCEDC

It's enjoyable and relaxing for many of us to meet up and hang out with friends after work or on the weekends. We find comfort in sharing stories, laughing and joking or discussing serious and sensitive matters among friends and family. There is a climate of trust that we have built over time that continues to grow throughout the years.

Just the same, it is important to build a climate of trust in your professional environment. I've seen and experience this first hand throughout my professional career path. People like to do businesses with people they know and trust; building relationships is the key to connecting with new clients. Be a good listener and ask a lot of questions as you get to know new acquaintances and be sure to follow up; do what you say your are gong to do! Most people love to share information about themselves and this will allow you to get to know them on a personal level. As you network with others, keep this in mind and use best practices to build trusting business relationships. Having this foundation of trust is where the referral plan comes in to play. As you get to know someone and trust their business practices, you will most likely refer future clients their way.

October Is Energy Awareness Month- Six Great Ways to Manage Your Energy Use & Save Money

bloggalenglenr

CLICK HERE to Learn More About PPL

If we could harness the energy of little kids excited to trick-or-treat – or the energy of kids after a few pieces of Halloween candy – we could probably light the entire state of Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, that seemingly boundless source of free seasonal energy hasn’t been tapped.

The good news is this: While there are no magic solutions for free energy, there are steps you can take to manage your energy use and reduce your electric bill as temperatures get colder and sunlight gets scarcer.

October is Energy Awareness Month. In some places, it’s also called Energy Action Month. That might be the better name: Awareness is a good first step, but action is needed to save.

What's Your Secret to Staying Cool This Summer?

bloggalenglenr

CCEDC Guest Blogger, Carol Obando-Derstine, PPL Corporation

It might be a cold washcloth, or an ice cube against the wrist, or a tall glass of iced tea to drink in front of a floor fan.

Whatever it is, I hope you’re putting it to good use. Another hot summer is here, and it’s important for everyone to take care of themselves to avoid heat-related illness.

At PPL, we take heat-related illness very seriously. Our linemen and other employees work in the heat every day to keep your service strong. We share safety tips with them, tell them to look out for each other, and urge them to be careful.

We care about you, our customers, too. And we hope you’ll be safe and know the risks, just like our linemen do. Read More
