There are two kinds of bad debts business and non-business (personal).   There is a big (tax) difference between business and non-business bad debts.   A business bad debt is an ordinary deduction and therefore can be offset against ordinary income.  A non-business bad debt is a short-term capital loss thus limited to $3,000 a year against other income, after offsetting capital gains.

Pruning my viburnum
If you're like me, you're staring at all the snow and ice and wondering if March will give us some relief from the cold. I want to get out into my garden.

            If it weren't for the deep snow and arctic temperatures, I definitely would prune my viburnum. It's so easy to see what needs to be pruned when there aren't any leaves to get in the way. Also, the sap isn't running yet, so it's not as messy.

Choosing a Business Structure

There are many items to consider when starting a business.  High on my list is the selection of a business structure or entity that is best for you, your business and the assets it holds.

The common choices for a small business are a LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) and S corporation.   Both business structures will give you personal asset protection, excluding a personal service corporation, if set up right and you follow business procedures for your chosen entity.  That does not mean you should forget about some kind of business insurance.
